Target Audience
Unemployed youth in rural areas and townships. Young people who are experiencing marginalisation, disadvantage and a range of barriers to employment.
Problem Statement:
Graduates need training in; transitioning from school/unemployment to work; being a professional; communication; selling; recruiting; basic business calculations; and understanding the workplace and developing a work ethic.
Intervention:
The SMART Work Readiness Programme trains unemployed young people to prepare them for successful employment. SMART exists to help young people who have experienced marginalisation, disadvantage and a range of barriers to employment. The current world of work is highly competitive. To find a job and stay in that job, employees have to differentiate themselves from the thousands of others that are in the same position. Developing well-rounded employability skills needed for finding, keeping, and being successful in a job is thus paramount.
| Belonging: We want a young person to belong somewhere immediately after college. | Work readiness: To train unemployed young people to prepare them for successful and gainful employment. |
| Healthy Self We want each young person to have a healthy mind and body, and to have access to the supports they need. | Healthy work We want each young person to have a pathway full of learning and earning opportunities |
The SMART Workplace Readiness programme is designed to equip first-time employees with skills, tools and techniques to succeed in entering the workplace and to stay gainfully employed. The programme addresses the multiple areas of development that new entrants into the workplace require, in order to build a sound tenure and career at any Financial Services Provider.
SMART is a high-impact programme which will also equip participants with “Power Skills”. These skills have historically been branded “soft skills”, but because they are so crucial to the survival and growth of a business, they are also called “POWER SKILLS”. As examples of power skills, we put Communication; the art of selling; and recruiting at the top of our list. Other power skills include: Professional personal behaviour, Workplace ethics, Working in a team, Presentation skills, Verbal and written communication, Professional personal behaviour, Building your brand, Happiness, Resilience, Analytical Thinking, Negotiation, Empathy, Collaboration, Creativity, Leadership, Problem solving, Time Management, Presentation skills, Business etiquette and Emotional Intelligence.
